How an Investigation Works
Although each investigation is handled uniquely depending on circumstances, some
things are fairly basic and core to most outings.  Generally speaking, you should
expect something like this (trust us, it's painless!):
INITIAL CONTACT
  • Our clients usually get in touch with us via our Contact Us page.
  • After the initial request, CPI will make contact with the requester for a detailed interview. We usually do
this over the phone, but in some cases we can and will do the interview in person. We will only accept
requests from the house/location owner or someone authorized by the owner in writing to conduct a
paranormal investigation. We reserve the right to refuse any investigation that is not authorized or
    believed to not be legitimate.
  • Click here for our Interview Form.
  • After the interview and acceptance, CPI and the requester will set up a date for the investigation.
PRE-INVESTIGATION AND SET-UP
  • CPI members typically arrive at the location sometime in late afternoon/early evening (depending on time
of year and extent of setup). This gives us time to get a tour of the location, speak more with the
requester, and generally get our bearings. We ask that the number of individuals at the site during the
investigation be limited as much as possible. It is very difficult to gather credible evidence when there are
a large number of people moving about and talking.
  • The number of team members on site depends on the size of the investigation, the location (local vs long
distance), and availability of team members on the scheduled date.
  • CPI will then set up our equipment. Some devices that may be used during the investigation include
thermometers, cameras, electro-magnetic frequency meters (EMF), audio and video recording devices,
motion detectors, compasses, and our own senses.
THE INVESTIGATION
  • After the equipment is set up, we will go "lights out." If possible, we will turn off all lights in the house.
  • Initially, we do a "baseline" of the areas with most activity, using EMF meters and other equipment. This is
to record any fluctuations that are easily explained, such as cold spots from a cracked window, electro-
magnetic frequency spikes due to appliances, etc.
  • After the baseline, we may confine ourselves to an area while we have equipment running in other
rooms. We ask that those areas be left alone during the investigation, and we may employ methods to
ensure there is no tampering of evidence.
  • At times we will also try to investigate the cause of a specific event. Many times there are reasonable
explanations for occurrences believed to be paranormal. It is our goal to find the truth, whether
    paranormal or not.
  • At the end of the investigation, CPI will pack up the equipment and head out. We do not provide any
conclusions as to whether the location is haunted or not during or immediately after the investigation.
  • The duration of the investigation varies depending on activity and the size of the location, but typically for a
residential home we are in and out in 3-5 hours.
  • In some cases, if the client is willing or requests it, we will involve them in some of the investigation. This
is something we have only begun doing recently, but find that it helps some clients better accept and
understand their events and can even provide some sense of comfort to be actively engaged in EVP work.
We also take the opportunity to demonstrate debunking methods.
ANALYSIS AND REPORT
  • Over the course of the next few weeks we will carefully review the evidence and document any findings.
  • After all evidence has been analyzed, we will contact the requester and discuss the results. If any
evidence has been discovered, we will arrange for the requester to review it, either in person or via some
    other mutually agreed upon method.
  • We will provide files of all audio and/or video upon request, as well as a copy of the final report.
  • CPI may publish non-identifying details of the report online for the benefit of other investigators or
    individuals interested in an investigation.
