Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS 10 MP Digital Camera
We use this for basic photography throughout an investigation. For price and
convenience, we use digital cameras. In the past we have used 35mm and
Polaroid, but didn't find that they were any better than digital, and they were
certainly more expensive to maintain.
Olympus VN-5200PC Digital Recorder
Sean and Beth both use the Olympus VN-5200PC digital recorder. This is a great
little unit with about 220 hours of recording time. A PC jack provides an easy way
to transfer recordings to a file. We recently upgraded from the VN-240PC and
can really tell the difference. The quality is way better, and we get around 35
hours of recording time on the best quality setting, more than enough time for an
investigation.
Canon PowerShot A470 7.1 MP Digital Camera
We use this for basic photography throughout an investigation.  Good
all-around camera and great for paranormal investigation.
Samsung SC-DX103 DVD Camcorder
If you research this unit, you'll find it isn't exactly highly rated! However, it
does pretty well for us for now.
As mentioned above, we have used other cameras. I used a Pentax K1000 35mm Film Camera,
which was about 25 years old. It was a great camera but film was expensive, and in most cases
it wasn't convenient to spend a lot of time on settings. When something happens - a sound, a
hit on the EMF detector, etc - you need a point & shoot. We also used a Polaroid for a while.
The advantage of Polaroid is that it is very difficult to alter the photograph. The disadvantages
are film price and the phasing out of these types of cameras (making film and repair even more
expensive and harder to find).

We also have an LED security camera with IR light that we hook up to a VCR (yeah, we
know...kind of old school!). We are hoping to upgrade to a Quad DVR with four IR cameras in
the near future.
We have used several sound editors to clean up possible EVP's, including Acoustica and
Wave Pad. Both worked fine for us. I have heard that Adobe is the best, but on our budget it is
a little expensive. We do recommend some type of sound editor. You would be surprised at how
many 'EVP's can be explained when you clean up the background noise.
From left to right:
  • Digital EMF Sensor
  • Basic analog Gauss Meter
  • KII EMF Detector with push on/push off button
  • CellSensor analog EMF detector with remote probe
  • Natural Tri-Field Meter

EMF Meters are a basic piece of ghost hunting equipment, used to capture electromagnetic
frequency anomalies. The belief is that when an entity is present, it emits an EMF field that can
be detected with this equipment. We use both the Gauss Meter and the CellSensor for
baselines, and for investigating multiple rooms. Since it's currently just the two of us, we will set
up an EMF detector with a camera on it as we investigate another room.

The digital EMF sensor is great because it is much easier to determine the EMF reading. The
KII with the push on/push off button is relatively new. We saw it being used on SyFy's "Ghost
Hunters" and wanted to give it a try. It lights up and beeps when EMF readings are detected. In
some cases, EMF detectors can be used to communicate with entities.

All of these EMF detectors are relatively inexpensive and can be found on ebay or amazon.
com. Next on our list (and budget) will be a Natural Tri-Field EMF meter. This unit filters out the
human-made EMF hits one would get from wires, electronic equipment, etc. It will only detect
"natural" EMF such as from a person (which is also good since it will detect if someone comes
near it...good for ensuring the integrity of evidence!).
Additional equipment and other items used on investigations:
  • Basic Flashlight
  • Compass - good for reading magnetic anomalies
  • Digital thermometer
  • UV Flashlight - allows visual in UV spectrum
  • IR Wireless Motion Detector - to prevent evidence tampering
  • Night Vision Scope
  • Batteries, batteries, batteries...always bring backup!
  • Matches - in case batteries fail
  • Pen and pad of paper
  • Watch or other time-recording device.

Sony DCR-HC52 MiniDV Handycam
Great hand-held with powerful 40x optical/2000x digital zoom. This camera
also has pretty good audio too, we have caught a few things on audio even
though the purpose is mainly for video.
Digital Blue (DigiBlue)
This camera (which is sold as a children's toy) switches automatically from
daytime recording to infrared illumination, letting you see up to 40 feet in
absolute darkness.  It can store up to two hours of video with a 2GB memory
card (sold separately). For the price, the picture is great. This was
recommended to us by another ghost hunting group, and we have two of
them. Great buy if you can't afford expensive security cameras.
Full-Spectrum Camera
We purchased this from Ghoststop.com. Jury is still out on this. We like that
it uses an SD Card but still needs an IR light to get a decent video.
